Lose signature on edit

Situation:
Custom content type with signature field.
Custom permissions on the content's fields.
User has permission to edit some fields, but not the signature field.
User edits body text of content and saves,
Original signature is lost.

If you view revisions on this, you can see "Changes to Signature" and the deletion of the XXXXXXXXX.png file.
