em tag on email subject even as plain text

Using Message notify 7.x-2.5+1-dev, amb getting emails with html tag on the subject, even the field is set to plain text. The html I'm getting is:

<em class="placeholder">my subject</em>

Is this a bug or there is something I'm missing?
