Leverage Entity Reference for new Profile entities?

While porting the contrib Profile2 module to D8, we asked ourselves whether it would be possible to attach the profile entities via entity reference field(s) to the User entity?

Let's discuss and explore this idea. It's unclear whether it will make sense and work out, but it is an interesting consideration.
