Conduct external website search within create content link field

I'd like to have a "source" link field in my content type that has some unique behavior when interacted with during node creation. I would a user to be able to dynamically conduct a search on another website within the field itself, be able to select a result, and then have that result saved as a clickable link. Is this possible?

Use case:
a) user clicks "create content"
b) in "source" link field, user enters a query (the field is tied to one pre-specified website [by site admin])
c) as user types query, the external website is queried, the results a displayed as an autocomplete/suggestion drop down within the field (like google instant)
d) user selects relevant result from within the field
e) user submits/saves node, selected result becomes formatted link that when clicked directs user to page on external site

Is this supported, planned, or even possible?

Thanks

Link module is in Drupal core now. I'll close this issue due to inactivity for 12 years and upcoming EOL of Drupal 7 in January 2025 β†’ . While the project version for Drupal 7 will keep providing support for security issues and website breaking bug fixes for Drupal 7, we should try to minimize the open issues for Drupal 7 in the queue as much as possible. Thanks for the report and all the efforts in here. Feel free to re-open if you can provide a fix or found an additional related problem which increases the issue priority to "Critical" here.
