Some sites may want the content creation links to be available only through special links (e.g. through wikitools, or through blocks placed in the "my blog" or "my projects" page). In this case the availability of the generic node/add page would be confusing to the user.
I propose a 'create content' permission that would remove the possibility to access node/add and would hide the 'Create content' menu. The possibility to access other node/add/* paths would still be driven by other permissions.
