Currently, we only allow the default fade in/out effect provided by Superfish (animation : {opacity:'show'}). We should also support the slide down (animation: {height:'show'}) and then provide a widget in the module's configuration page to allow the user to choose the animation they desire (same way we do with the animation speed drop-down).
