Module Installation UI should not allow installation of -dev versions.

Allowing people to install -dev versions of modules via the UI means they may not have access to their DB (or file system) to turn them off if they get into trouble.

I've had to answer a lot of questions about how to solve the WSOD when someone tried to install a dev release of a module which was not ready for D7 yet.

It seems that this problem could be (mostly) prevented if only official releases installed via the UI. If you don't know how to install a module without it, you shouldn't be running -dev versions anyway.

Closing as outdated as there hasn't been movement in 12 years. But the permission to install modules should be given to trusted users. Also verified on a non production environment to avoid issues.
