The IP Limiter module for Drupal allows you to limit the number of requests from a single IP address to specific paths on your site. This can help prevent abuse and reduce server load.

Warning: This module is giving a firewall limiter functionality but should not be used as a firewall on its own. The module should be used to provide only minor additional protection to specific pages but it will not save your server necessarily. Keep in mind, that valid IPs, like crawlers or other, might also be affected.

What it can do: It can prevent bots from overflowing your server with requests in heavy duty pages, like the search pages. It can be useful when your site is of low or medium traffic and you notice a very high amount of spam requests to your site. IP limiter can help by blocking these spam requests, thus, not allowing the requests to be processed and put load to your services.

What it cannot do: The module cannot prevent the server load 100%. Consider that requests that are blocked on application level are still processed by your webserver, pass through firewall, write logs, stress the server, but impact the website minimally. The final solution should be a permanent ban in your firewall if the IP is determined to be malicious or spam.

Installation

Download and install the module as you would any other Drupal module.
Enable the module at /admin/modules.
Configure the module settings at /admin/config/system/ip-limiter.

Configuration

To configure the IP Limiter module, navigate to /admin/config/system/ip-limiter. Here you can set the following options:

Time Period: The time period (in minutes) during which the request limit applies.
Ban Duration: The duration (in minutes) for which an IP address will be banned after exceeding the request limit.
Max Requests: The maximum number of requests allowed from a single IP address during the time period.
Blocked Paths: A list of paths to which the request limit applies.
Response Type: The type of response to return when the request limit is exceeded (e.g., 403 Forbidden, 404 Not Found).
