CCK Date fields should be formattable using core drupal formatters

When creating a CCK date field, I would like to be able to select the formatters that drupal offers (long, short, etc) or one of the formatters that another contrib module provides. Currently, when it is selected, CCK continues to output the same date format. The only way to change the display is with a CCK date field formatter similar to this: http://www.opensourcery.com/blog/dylan-tack/quick-custom-cck-date-formatter

It seems like the built-in drupal formatters should function here.
