Strip Tags from Views-List (Drupal 6)

Hi, I've been reading multiple open threads about removing the extra html tags that the views-list display generates. I'm not sure what purpose it serves, or if I should just get rid of it or not.

I've tried styling the list view, and I've done this before plenty of times using the tpl.php files to remove certain tags from being generated, but is there a hook I can insert into template.php to rewrite the output instead?

Also, using Firebug, I've drilled down on the styles and the heirarchy and for some reason, the styles STILL are not updating. I had the list (it's a menu) generated manually in a preview file, but now that Drupal is handling the listing/linking, It's wrapped in so many tags that my css styles are not getting through.

any insight? D6.10 patches? function hooks for D6 ?
