I know there are lots of alternative solutions, but I wanted something that would backup restore my sites files (themes and selected files directories), so I have hacked this very good module to do so. (This is mainly for the purpose of migration between dev/test/live sites.)
It is probably not bullet-proof but if it is of use to anyone I attach a zip file (can't easily get to the server to make a tarball - hence the need in the first place).
