Profile image/picture size

Created on 11 September 2025, about 2 months ago

Problem/Motivation

By default the image that comes back from a users profile for Google is small. I think 96x96 which looks like a postage stamp on my user profile page.

From a bit of web searching it looks like you can request better images.

Facebook may have similar things, as perhaps many providers might:

Proposed resolution

As mentioned it looks like these are query parameters you can pass. Perhaps you can have a setting which allows users to ask for larger images. (I think the larger google image is only 400, so still not huge).

User interface changes

Possibly a settings select box allowing users to turn the feature on/off depending on what you think a good default is.

Personally I think most people will want to enable it for all providers that offer it. Thus a global setting (Request high resolution profile image if available) would be most convenient.

I think if you were starting out you would want better images to be the default, but if possible keep the old setting for existing installations.
