On the module main "list" it outputs a drupal warning message if there is an issue that would prevent messages from being logged there. It checks for either the module or the system settings/config. I tested it out with all possible combinations of incorrectly setup and got warnings for all of them, then tried the two ways to get devel mail logger working and the warning messag goes away. Woohoo.
On the sent a test email page, it has a link back to the list of messages you just came from, because assumedly you'd want to see that the test email got logged or not?
