This is now centrally handled by \Drupal\bpmn_io\Service\PrepareComponents::sanitizeConfigValue and \Drupal\bpmn_io\Service\PrepareComponents::upcastConfiguration. At the same time, support for non-form-api UI got removed, see also 📌 Remove optional Form API config Active
