give a clearer error message when logging in to the server fails

Problem/Motivation

I forgot to create the user on the server environment I was connecting to, and I get this confusing error in the form:

> Will not follow more than 5 redirects

Can something clearer be produced?

Can we turn off redirects completely and get something back about that?
