Meeting to agree way forward for DEW

Created on 3 April 2025, 2 months ago

There has been minimal activity regarding DEW since conception and no elections have been held in the last few years.

There are a number of reasons why now is good time for deciding the future of DEW including:

  • the success of the first DrupalCamp England event in March this year
  • discussions at DrupalCon Atlanta regarding a potential European Drupal Association
  • increasing momentum behind NEDA

Proposed dates for the meeting are currently:
9th April @ 17:30 (BST) for 1hr, or
15th April @ 16:00 (BST) for 1hr, or
16th April @ 15:00 (BST) for 1hr
(confirmed date will be updated here)

    Meeting Notes:
    Summary
Will Huggins and Andy Read discussed the future of Drupal England and Wales, considering disbandment or integration into a larger European association. A public meeting, planned for June, will be held to gather community feedback via survey and elect new officers for chairperson, treasurer, and secretary; Will Huggins will share meeting information with Andy Read for distribution, and the group's financial inactivity will be officially recorded.

    Meeting Overview:

    • Will Huggins and Andy Read discussed the future of Drupal England and Wales. They considered whether the organization should be disbanded or continue, potentially within a larger European Drupal association (00:06:05). They decided to hold a public meeting, possibly in June, to gather feedback and make a decision (00:08:30).
    • Drupal England and Wales Status: The group acknowledged a lack of recent activity and that current officers have served beyond their expected terms (00:10:46). They agreed that elections for chairperson, treasurer, and secretary should be held at the upcoming public meeting (00:09:36). They also noted that there have been no official financial transactions for the organization (00:17:27).
    • Upcoming Public Meeting: Will Huggins and Andy Read planned a public meeting, likely in June, to discuss the future of Drupal England and Wales. They will provide at least a month's notice and plan to use a survey to gather input beforehand (00:08:30) (00:13:22). The meeting will include elections for new officers (00:10:46).
    • Andy Read's Reduced Involvement: Andy Read explained their reduced involvement in Drupal, citing personal circumstances, a shift in career focus toward data engineering, and a change in the landscape of web development (00:03:09).
    • European Drupal Association: Will Huggins discussed a potential European Drupal association, suggesting that it could provide a framework for local groups like Drupal England and Wales. They highlighted the potential benefits of a more internationalized governance structure for Drupal (00:07:08).
    • Communication and Outreach: Will Huggins will share information about the upcoming public meeting with Andy Read, who will then share it with the Drupal London community (00:14:12). They also plan to use Andy Read's experience with the Drupal London meetup surveys to gather input (00:13:22).
    • Financial Status: Andy Read confirmed that, to their knowledge, Drupal England and Wales has not conducted any financial transactions and has not opened a bank account (00:17:27). They agreed to officially record this as the group's financial status (00:18:16).
    • Drupal London Meetup: Andy Read mentioned the Drupal London meetup, suggesting that Will Huggins could present at a future meeting to inform the community about the Drupal England and Wales plans (00:15:09) (00:16:42). They discussed scheduling the presentation and the frequency of meetups (00:15:54).

    Suggested next steps

    1. Will Huggins will share meeting notes in the channel and set a date for a general meeting about Drupal England and Wales, communicating it as soon as possible.
    2. Andy Read will share information about the general meeting with the Drupal London community to encourage attendance and input.
    3. Will Huggins will plan to speak at a Drupal London meetup in May, in advance of the general meeting.
