Translating from different source language may lead to missing paragraphs in case of asymetric translations

Created on 24 February 2025, about 2 months ago

Problem/Motivation

The site is using paragraphs and paragraphs_asymmetric_translation_widgets to ensure the possibility of asymetric translations for more than 20 languages. Usually all translations are based on the default language - en in our case.
But in some cases editors did a lot of changes in other language variants of a page - e.g. de and those changes should be taken into account while translating into other languages.
This won't work, since ContentEntitySource only fetches the original source language of the translation and not the selected one (in case of asymetric paragraphs).

Steps to reproduce

  • setup with paragraphs, paragraphs_asymmetric_translation_widgets, 3 languages (en, nl, de)
  • create simple paragraph type Text block
  • create a node type Page with a paragraph field which uses paragraph type text block
  • create new Page with at least 2 text paragraphs in language en
  • translate Page to de with tmgmt workflow (you may use deepl or other provider)
  • make some changes to the de language variant
  • use the /admin/tmgmt/sources overview and select de as source language and nl as target and request translation
  • in this case the en language variant will be used as source and not the selected de variant

Proposed resolution

  • explicitly check for job source language (and load source translation) while saving translation
