In the main navigation, I have several drop-down menus and they have nested entries. However, the down arrow only shows when I click on the menu first so if user wants a sub-menu entry, s/he has to click on the menu, then click again on the drop-down icon, then select their entry (see 2 attached images). Is there a way to keep the down arrow always visible?

Please check the menu configuration ../admin/structure/block to ensure it's correctly configured in the region. Make sure you select Expand all menu links
