Drupal 8 support has some very specific code paths as it's not a Composer project template build. It'd be easier to maintain with it dropped, and it's also unsupported and very old.
Drupal 9 support isn't a lot of extra effort, but it is also EOL.
Drupal 7 will remain since it is not EOL.
