I am wondering if you've ever considered putting the cloned content into workspace.
When cloning content sometimes you want to be in place where all the referenced content is also cloned. That way content can be duplicated and completely severed from existing content, to prevent accidentally making changes to content that is shared / used in multiple places.
If cloned content was placed in a workspace then you could direct the workspace to publish all the items that are in it and you can have one big content push.
The historical downside of using workspaces is that when you place a piece of content into a workspace it can't be edited by others. The workspace enforces its privilege to be the sole editor of that content and prevents that content from "drift" when it's being edited by multiple authors. Cloning content into a workspace works around that issue because it allows new content to be worked on, that will eventually replace the original, AND allows content editors to continue to improve the original.
What do you think?
