In the 8.x-3.x branch we needed to use version_compare() in two places to provide different code depending on which Drupal version we were running.
In the 4.0.x branch, we have eliminated support for D9 and thus we can do away with the conditional code meant to work with older versions of Drupal/Symfony/PHP.
