[meta] Drupal 10 version roadmap

Just wanted to get this one out here:

I don't think we should aim to replace the purge module ecosystem etc. that would be mad.

So I reckon, we should:

  • Provide a nice way to connect to the Varnish admin socket, as we always have done.
  • Provide a decent API for sending invalidations to the socket
  • Consider removing most ways that we try to invalidate cache items, maybe keep a single 'cache clear' button?
  • Remove our cache bin implementation, because I don't think we need one for Drupal any more. You can disable the page cache.
  • Provide a purge plugin that takes the purge requests and sends them over the admin socket.
  • Say that we're feature complete.

    I'm going to release an early alpha, because I'm already using the current 2.x dev code in production, and it's working. But, I'm only using specific functions and I've got the big 'unsupported' red lights in the update module status etc.

    But, I fully expect we're going to remove some API before a beta, so: danger!
