Yes, this would be a good feature. Adding an option to set how often this block is updated. It would reduce unnecessary API calls on top of the performance benefits mentioned.
is there a way to cache this block's contents?
connecting to google maps api every time slows the site down.
it would be nice to cache the block and have it refresh contents in the background, for example after every request of that block, or every x minutes
