Sometimes you cannot update a link in a meaningful way. The destination is gone forever.
However archive.org probably has a copy of the destination exactly as it looked like back when you linked to it.
You cannot (in any meaningful or safe way) link to freecenter.com these days. But the archived version, https://web.archive.org/web/20040609015229/http://www.freecenter.com/ , may be worth linking to.
Have a look at the Wayback Filter module → . It's rather easy to link to archive.org in a meaningful and automated way. If you have the node created date at hand it's even better.
Understand the feature request. Maybe reach out to the maintainer of the Wayback Filter module → to get some additional clues. He's a friendly and nice guy, I've heard.
