Gather existing resources tracking Drupal usage in industry sectors

Problem/Motivation

The long term future of Drupal is dependant upon new organisations choosing to develop digital services upon the platform. The CMS market place is huge. Selecting a right platform is a non trivial exercise and encompasses a range of disciplines and concerns.
Evidence of wide spread successful implementation of a system by peer organisations is compelling and reassuring to evaluators.

Whilst it is common oral knowledge within the Drupal community that for good reasons the platform has high adoption in many industry verticals and sectors, this information is not necessarily immediately available to evaluators.

Evidence exists on D.O, LinkedIn, external websites. At best the good news is hard to find, at worst an evaluator never discovers it and Drupal doesn't make the short list.

Proposed resolution

Promote this blog article calling those contributing to or maintaining research about Drupal adoption towards this issue. Encourage them to post a comment about their resource therefore raising awareness. Complete work to validate and surface evidence prominently in Evaluator user journey.

Remaining tasks

  1. Gather links to resources by making comments in this issue.
  2. Collate the resources, identify gaps / opportunities
  3. make available to Promote Drupal evaluator team

TheDropTimes has launched a project focusing on this theme, inspired by Kevin → from the University of Colorado. I have carried out the study on the use of Drupal among top universities worldwide. The initial results show that 80% of the universities ranked in the top 100 by QS employ Drupal in some manner. For more details, see Drupal Usage in Top Universities Worldwide: Progress Report and Seeking Support.

The full dataset can be accessed here: Drupal in Education: Data on CMS Usage in the World's Top 300 Universities.

Grzegorz Pietrzak → has conducted a similar study on cities: Global City Website Trends Analysis: CMS Usage on Official City Websites.

TheDropTimes plans to continue publishing studies like these. Data collection is underway for several categories, including:

    • CMS usage among country websites
    • CMS usage among non-profit organizations in the USA
    • CMS usage among scientific research organizations in the USA

    And many more.

We welcome suggestions for other lists we could compile. The methodology used to compile the university list is documented here: Behind the Scenes: Drupal's Footprint in Top Universities.

    Vimal,

I am so delighted to read your comment and the linked blog showing the methodology. Thank you also for making us aware of the work by Grzegorz.

During the Promote Drupal Evaluator meeting yesterday, which happens every 2 weeks, I suggested that we ideally want to seek people to take ownership of maintaining statistics Drupal references in brand story and official marketing. It sounds like you and The Drop Times may have already taken the first step in becoming that? What do you think?

We also posed the question of what rankings would it be valuable to track adoption rates for. This needs to be either at continent or global sector level perhaps. Those University rankings are an excellent example but it would be good to expand out into other rankings in for example Finance, Pharma, certain stock market indexes perhaps?

This is a new and very important area we are focussing on. I very much appreciate your making contact and look forward to working alongside you.

    Hi Paul,

Yes, TheDropTimes is all in for anything related to promoting Drupal. The work on universities was done specifically with this in mind. For ranking, we can go with https://tranco-list.eu/, which provides authentic and independent rankings on website popularity. We can also look into lists like the Fortune 500, INC 5000, and Dun & Bradstreet.

We now have statistics for universities, which drupal.org can start using. Also, let me know if you have a priority for specific industries. As mentioned in my previous comment, we did some work on a list of country websites – collecting data on 190+ main country websites and their CMSs. This will be published in couple of weeks. We've also collected lists of non-profit organizations and scientific research organizations, though we still need to process those for CMS detection.

Let me know how we can collaborate on this better.

Hi there, I just had to make some sort of review of the advantages and drawbacks of modern Drupal for a client's project. And I could not find up-to-date info about Drupal 8+ usage in the media sector (online press,...) : marketshare evolution, examples of famous big media websites using Drupal 8+ around the world,...
Another questioning I had is: are some of them still using Drupal 7, and if so, are they planning to move to another platform or to Drupal 10? Of course, the answer would be interesting but is hard to know.

The list of CMS usage in the official country websites - https://www.thedroptimes.com/39628/analysis-cms-usage-across-official-we...

If you take top 100 websites (based on Tranco Rank) Drupal top the list. This is a good indicator that Drupal popular among large/popular/highly ranked Country websites.

The challenge we faced in this is on identifying the CMS for the portal. Out of 194 websites, we were able to identify cms of 125.

Here are the details - https://www.thedroptimes.com/39628/analysis-cms-usage-across-official-we...
