Leaving this open so we can remove the changes not needed after #3421674: Add condition in .simpletest-db for mariadb → is committed which hopefully will be soon.

The issue is now merged.

I suggest that you use ref: main instead of ref: $_GITLAB_TEMPLATES_REF, at least for now, to get this feature.

"main" will always have the latest, $_GITLAB_TEMPLATES_REF will have the recommended tag for all contrib, but we update the latter less regularly, to be able to try latest additions without affecting all of contrib.
