Entity Browser Form Widget

I have created an Entity Browser and am configuring the Form Widget on a Content Type to select a Brandfolder Image. I do not see any discernible difference between the options for Selection Modes: Append to selection, Prepend to selection, and Edit selection. I have tried selecting each one and do not understand what they do for the user in the selection process. What are these options intended to do?
