When did the format change?

Created on 5 January 2024, 6 months ago

I recently upgraded to CKEditor 5, and it appeared that everything was working fine. But recently we noticed that it appears that the format of the footnotes format expected by this module has changed. Previously we could use a simple format like this

<fn>footnote text here</fn>

But now it appears we must use a newer format like this

<fn value="" text="footnote text here"></fn>

To further complicate things, any node that is using the old format currently works, but if we go to edit and then save a node that has that format, it causes permanent data loss! This might be covered by this ticket: https://www.drupal.org/project/footnotes/issues/3391021 πŸ› Data loss: everything before last colon in every footnote is lost when using instead of [fn] syntax Needs work

When did the format change? When I read the module description I don't see any mention or warning about this. There is a patch that is supposed to provide a backward compatibility layer, but it currently has a bug ( https://www.drupal.org/project/footnotes/issues/3381594 πŸ› Legacy support when updating from 3.0 for CKEditor 5 Needs work )

I have just been granted co-maintainership today so I do not have the background about when/why, but can help support. Would suggest we continue this discussion here: https://www.drupal.org/project/footnotes/issues/3381594 πŸ› Legacy support when updating from 3.0 for CKEditor 5 Needs work - I have made a suggestion there as to way forward.
