How to understand item counts in log messages?

I have an excel spreadsheet with 119 rows that I converted to a CSV file. The CSV also has 119 rows when I open it in Excel or in a text editor. When I run the import for my feed, I see messages in the log like...

Resources import: Failed importing 290 Resource items.
Resources import: Created 75 Resource items.

Given that my CSV file has 119 rows, why do I see "Failed importing 290..." What does that indicate? Does it mean there is a formatting problem in my CSV? When I open the CSV in Excel or a text editor, it has 119 rows, so why would Drupal think there are 290 items to import? If this is a formatting problem in my file, what could cause such a problem when exporting a CSV from Excel?

I don't know. Could you try the import again with the Feeds Log module enabled? The logs that it will then create give you perhaps more insight. Feeds Log is part of Feeds.
