upgrading from 8x1.7 to 3alpha I get WSOD syntax error, unexpected '|'

When trying to upgrade to Drupal 10 readiness for this module (3alpha) I get a fatal php error, 'WSOD syntax error, unexpected '|''

update module to 3alpha from 8x1.7 - Is there a work around? or patch I should be also using?
