Custom Composite element UI is ambiguous and often results in "YAML must contain an associative array of elements"

I haven't been able to add a Custom Composite element to a form. For my testing, I am using the contact form that ships with Webform. I am just trying to create the simplest element possible for testing purposes. When I submit the form for this element, I always see...

YAML is not valid.

    YAML must contain an associative array of elements.

Custom properties is not valid.

    YAML must contain an associative array of elements.

Even if I create an element that is simply one text field in the Custom Composite settings, I see the above errors.
