This patch does not totally solve the issue as it still creates a blue block when it drops down that obscures a lot of the page unnecessarily and is not high enough a z-index.
I will work on this some more.

This latest patch should address the issues that I mentioned. They work on the site that I have fixed this for. Great to hear if it works for others.
