It looks like there were some patches suggested ~1 year ago to get this beyond an alpha, but https://www.drupal.org/project/simple_sitemap/releases/8.x-3.11 → was the last release of the 3.x branch.
Because of https://git.drupalcode.org/project/simple_sitemap_index/-/blob/1.0.x/sim..., this can't be enabled with a supported version of simple_sitemap.
