Give administrator access after groups were created

Problem/Motivation

I've successfully removed the patch to support config entities with string ids, and updated from Group 1.5 to 2.2. However, due to the permissions changes, the account I use to administer the website is not able to administer the groups or their content. I and two other people are responsible for creating groups, so our accounts are admin accounts on some (but not all) of some of the groups.

Can anyone suggest any way for me to resolve this situation so that any single user account has permission to administrate all of the groups? Is there a drush command that will let me add a user to a group? I've tried to analyze the database tables to find where/how memberships are defined, but I see membership records for user/1, but I don't see an obvious way to change those membership records to an 'admin' role.
