So as discussed offline, I think we are parking pending further investigation as to the difference between two fields in D9 and D10 - why it appears flattened in D9, but no longer flattened in D10.

Given 2x branch now has a loader that follows Drupal's approach will close this off. Going to mark as fixed rather than outdated to give credit for the work done here, thanks!
