The Update content entity should be your starting point. Then you can check all the necessary conditions that need to be met, and then you can use the email action to send the email to the original author, which you can receive from a token.

What do you mean by that? Sending an email is not a condition, it's an action. With conditions, you may want to check if the node is published, if it has the right status, etc. And if the node is ready such that you want to notify the author, you can then use the send email action.

You can check the value of the status field. This should be 1 or 0, depending on whether it's published or not. There is a condition to compare field values: Entity: compare field value
