When used in a single value field there is no problem. However if you change the field from single value to multi value field at some time after configuring unique_field_ajax on the single value field, the configuration remains in the field config file.
however you cannot see unique_field_ajax config in the field alter interface anymore
1. add a field with a single value and enable/configure unique_field_ajax
2. add a content
3. change field to a multi value field
4. add a new content and add the same value in step 1
5. you will see the field verification however field accepts the same value.
