This is not a bug and in any case development only happens in the dev branch of the module. Please be also aware that this module is compatible with several search engines apart from Google A change like this needs to be properly researched.
I am happy to entertain this if someone is willing to confirm these attributes are meaningless for all of the major search engines.

The sitemap protocol still contains
<priority>and<changefreq>values.
