I've also run into this need, and would need it per widget and/or storage instance (e.g. some view displays that are ok to use when my paragraph allows only 1 viewsreference field (and can thus fit all its items), whereas another paragraph type with viewsreference cardinality of 2 to display them in columns might needs limits on the views displays that can "fit" in each column).
