It’s pretty strange, though, this normally shouldn’t happen. Instead of trying to sanitize the output after producing the faulty highlighting, though, it would probably be better not to create the faulty except in the first place.
For instance, how about the attached patch?

Also, did you try with the latest dev version of the module?
