Ease the upgrade from Drupal 8 and make branch 8.x-1.x Drupal 9 compatible

Problem/Motivation

Currently if you have to upgrade a Drupal 8 site, you can't install the latest version with composer until you actually upgrade to Drupal 9. I think version 1.x is actually compatible with Drupal 9, just throws deprecation errors, so it would make the process easier to be able to stay on version 1 during the upgrade process, and then update to version 2.
