Ability to hide/disable "Editors" column

I would like the ability to hide or disable the Editors column of the Sections page, to force assignation by role only. I don't want site users to have the ability to assign specific users to an Editors role. It can create confusion when there is more than one way to do something.

By default, both columns should be visible, to make the feature discoverable. But it should be possible to disable the Editors column, so I don't have to say "Do not use the Editors column" in site documentation. The other option is to use CSS/JS or a hook to target the column, and disable the links, but the column has no class assigned to it and any theming trickery could be broken by a future module update.
