tokens not converted to values for entity reference view

Problem/Motivation

The page token sent by a node is not being 'decoded' so is not used as a contextual filter for my entity reference view

Steps to reproduce

I have an entity reference view which has a contextual filter that should come from the node containing the auto-complete entity-reference field. I did initially get the view working, although I had to fiddle with it for hours before the [page:title] token worked in the "view argument" field and I still don't know why, since I kept trying the same 5 variations and/or sequences until one suddenly and randomly was recognized. Revisiting this view (with no changes) a couple of months later in the process of exporting it to another copy of the site, it no longer works on either site. The token is not translated: when I put something in the "preview with contextual filters" field (and print the parameter out with the results field) the view works perfectly, but testing via the node's entity reference field I see [page:title] and nothing is filtered. I have also tried [node:title] and many other tokens - none appear as actual values in the view result, no matter what I do. No other 'dummy' entity reference views I've tried seem to be getting token values now either. If I print out the contextual filter ({{raw_arguments.tid}} with the results, what shows in the results is [current-page:title] result blah blah so the specified page parameter IS being passed, it's just not being interpreted.

This is driving me crazy! Any help will be very much appreciated, Thanks.
