Can we use the formatter to display a remote PDF

Problem/Motivation

We are working on a interesting education-related Drupal site and we have this module working fine to display a local Media file.

But what we want to do now is use the same excellent field formatter to control the display of a remote PDF which sits on a fully-qualified URL such as THIS ONE.

So I suppose what I'm really asking is whether or not I could use the formatter with a Link field?

Specifically, we are looking to be able to display PDFs (just like the one above) with a 'Fit page' zoom and in a 'Single page' viewing mode - this way, PDFs like the one above will appear to behave as simple slideshows and that's what we're looking for.

If anyone can help or offer another solution to being able to the control the view of external PDF files, we would be very grateful
