Question regarding upgrade path

My site is currently running 3.0.5 and I'm looking to upgrade to the latest version. At the top of the module's details page it has a banner message saying that you must update to 3.0.9 before you go to 3.1.x.

Does this requirement apply to any version prior to 3.1.x or only if you're currently on version 3.0.8?

It's always recommended to go onto the latest patch release before doing a minor version upgrade. Also, 3.0.9 fixes compatibility with Acquia Connector 4.x along the way.
