Group creator added to group twice, listed four times

Problem/Motivation

Creating a new group causes the creator to be added as a member twice, once with a role and once without. Moreover, the user is listed four times on the members page.

Steps to reproduce

1) Create a fresh install of Drupal 9.3.
2) Install the Group module.
3) Create a new group type. Check all access settings options.
4) Create a new group.
5) Navigate to the group membership page (group/GID/members).

You should see the group creator account listed four times, twice as an Admin and twice with no roles. Checking each user should show that each pair of listings is a duplicate.

The same problem occurs even with version 3. You see the same problem not only with "add members" but also when adding media entities.
All entities are listed twice.
