How is it supposed to work

Installed on Drupal 9 and configured the filter per instructions. I tested on a node with the correct text/filer format but nothing happens when I add the "#" to any word (e.g. #linkthisword) in a node.

Please confirm how we're supposed to use it as there is no help/doc found about this.
