I think the best it to extend it via API and not integrating into LMM. It looks like a niche map system, and anyone who needs it can use hook like documented on the related post.
Here a module that integrates OpenSeaMaps in leaflet. With patch for more maps. I had it custom made by berramou several years ago. Please feel free to integrate it.
