Hi,
We have groups that are not associated with terms and a few of them are associated.
When we tried to sync group and taxonomy terms (screenshot for that button also attached in this defect), the groups that did not have a corresponding term got deleted.
We couldn't understand why the group deletion would happen with sync.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By design the module deletes all groups for the configured group type that are not being used in the configuration page
