Marking as won't fix. As of now, I don't believe this meets our needs for a variety of reasons, not the least of:

https://www.drupal.org/project/simple_decoupled_preview → worked around this by forking the module, but that kind of defeats the desire to standardize here.
Even aside from that limitation, this would only cover some of the module's current preview use cases.
